Lotus for example. Instead of improving its product, it sued Borland for, ahem, infringing on it. Look and feel. Lotus was a prostitute. It no longer exists.
DBase. The premier name in database engines. Instead of improving, it sued anybody that used its language. Guess what? It does not exist anymore.
Word Perfect was the wild card. It never sued anybody. It sold itself to Novell. Which sold it to Corel after the brand was gutted. All this stuff seems to go through Novell. If Noorda hated Microscum, you could have fooled me. He handed the whole ball of wax to them on a platter.
Networking? Novell 3.12 was the best at the time.
Word Processing? Word Perfect was THE word processor.
Now? Networking is actually something nobody thinks about anymore, and M$ provides it.
Office? Lotus killed Quatro Pro. DBase III killed itself. And Novell killed (another Utah compandy) Word Perfect. And the winner is: You guessed it: Billy G.
I don't know. DOS/Windows came about because Billy G was in the right place and lucky. MS Office is a monopoly because... well I don't know. Either everybody else was just stupid, or something happened. I don't know.
I am rooting for Linux.
